When exploring the Collasuyo region of the ancient Inca Empire, you’ll discover four majestic lagoons nestled among timeless Andean mountains — sacred sites the Incas believed to be the origin of life itself. The area also showcases an impressive network of ancestral Inca roads, still connected by handwoven suspension bridges crafted from natural ichu grass. One remarkable example is the Q’eswachaka Bridge, which remains in active use today. Crossing this living piece of history is not only possible — it’s an unforgettable cultural and adventure experience.
Tour to the Four Lagoons and Q’eswachaka Inca Bridge
In the morning, we’ll pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco and begin our journey heading southeast by bus. Along the way, we’ll pass through several traditional Andean towns, including:
Huasao, known for its spiritual healers,
Oropesa, famous for its traditional bread,
Huacarpay, home to a scenic lagoon,
Andahuaylillas, featuring the iconic “Sistine Chapel of the Andes,”
and Urcos, with its tranquil lagoon.
We then continue to Chuquicahuana, where we start ascending toward our first main stop: Pomacanchi Lagoon. Surrounded by highland grasslands and medicinal plants, this area supports diverse wildlife, including native and migratory birds.
Our next destination is the stunning Acopia Lagoon, known for its vibrant turquoise-green waters that reflect the surrounding mountain peaks. Along the way, you’ll witness local farmers working their fields using traditional Inca tools.
At the highest point of the route, we reach a panoramic viewpoint, offering a breathtaking view of all four interconnected lagoons. From there, we descend, stopping at the remaining two lagoons to complete the Four Lagoons Circuit.
After this peaceful nature experience, we continue toward our highlight of the day: Q’eswachaka, the last remaining Inca suspension bridge.
Q’eswachaka Inca Bridge
Spanning 33 meters in length and 1.2 meters in width, and suspended 26 meters above the Apurímac River, this remarkable bridge is entirely handwoven from natural ichu grass by local communities — just as the Incas did centuries ago. Still in use today, Q’eswachaka remains a vital cultural and transportation link and offers visitors a unique opportunity to cross a living piece of Inca engineering. The surrounding canyon is considered one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Peru.
