At the scheduled time, Head Expeditions Peru will pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco. From there, we’ll travel in comfortable private transportation to the picturesque village of Maras, a colonial-era town that still preserves its original charm and architecture. As you walk through its narrow streets, you’ll admire beautifully carved stone lintels and doorways, showcasing detailed low-relief sculptures that reflect its rich history.
After exploring Maras, we’ll continue our journey to the remarkable agricultural terraces of Moray, an impressive Inca site believed to have been a sophisticated agricultural laboratory.
Moray is located at 3,450mt located, where we find the agricultural terraces of Moray with its complex system of irrigation and terraces. The different levels of terraces are carved into a large bowl, part of which was excavated further by the Incas. The terraces have varied microclimates depending on the depth in the container they are, and so are believed to have been used by the Incas to discover the optimal conditions for their crops. These terraces were as a natural green house to grow an extraordinary variety of crops at a height that would normally only grow in tropical Andes then we will Salt.
Salineras where the salt mine, which consists of 3,000 small pools of about 5 square meters (53.8 sq ft) in size. Every three days during the dry season, workers fill the pools with salt water from a natural hot spring at the top of the complex of Maras. When the water evaporates from the pool, the salt is left for collection. This process is conducted for a period of one month until the pools reach a volume of solid salt that is 10 centimeters (4 inches) high. The salt is ground, treated with iodine, and is packaged and sent to the various markets in the region.
